Finding Our Way Back

(Jonah 2:1-10, 4:9-11)
We try to be on the path that God prepared for us but sometimes, we get distracted by our limited view of His plan. We therefore find ourselves in a situation we never wanted or imagined to be in, and yet there we are. Finding our way back seems impossible and on our own, it is.
Jonah was disobedient to God and went his own way. He was therefore tossed out of the ship, the waters closed in over him and he ended inside the belly of a fish. I can imagine his anguish and despair realizing that he displeased God. After Jonah cried out, repented and vowed to go to Nineveh to preach as God wanted, God commanded the fish to spit him out.
I am moved by God’s patience. He placed Jonah where he can recognize his selfishness and anger. Then God illustrated His reason for saving Nineveh. God didn’t have to do that – He is God! He even tolerated Jonah’s temper tantrum. What a loving God!
When we find ourselves in the belly of despair and hopelessness – we simply cry out to Him, bare our hearts, ask for forgiveness and a way back to His path. God’s loving response is unequalled by anything we know from this world – and when we are back in Him, the joy is complete. No place or person can drag us down … no matter how dark, strange or impossible our situation is, our God can command anything to spit us out so we can be back where we should have been all along.
